Commencement vs Graduation: What’s the Difference?

Commencement is the public ceremony held to recognize and celebrate students’ achievements. Participation is voluntary. UNT Dallas conducts commencement exercises twice each year in May and December. Students may only participate in one commencement exercise per academic career. Confirming attendance at the Commencement Ceremony is a separate process from applying to graduate. Students who apply to graduate must also RSVP to the Commencement Ceremony.

Graduation is the required process for every student who has completed their degree requirements and wishes to have their degree conferred. It is the official administrative recognition of a student fulfilling their academic degree requirements.  Students must apply to graduate in their final term of completing coursework. If you have not already, please contact your academic advisor to confirm that you are ready to graduate.
